Working with Us
The European School The Hague offers a truly international working environment, located in one of the Netherlands's most cosmopolitan cities: The Hague. The Hague offers a large expat population and as such offers housing, health, and transport facilities.
ESH Primary is conveniently situated in-between the city centre and the beach, and ESH Secondary is just a 10 minute bike ride from Central Station.
Our new staff are warmly welcomed by our professional, sociable, and very international team. In certain circumstances, teachers hired from abroad may be eligible for the 30% tax ruling, and we may be able to provide free education for up to two children.

Professional Development
Professional development delivers benefits to our teachers, their profession and our pupils. Our goal is to ensure our teachers are up-skilled, and have learning opportunities to keep pace with the current standards in education. Teachers have 5 INSET days per year and two induction days per year. Staff at the ESH are involved in continual, on-site professional development opportunities, otherwise known as Professional Learning Community (PLC).
Professional Learning Community (PLC)
PLCs (in Secondary only) are groups of educators who meet regularly to share expertise, work collaboratively, and expand their teaching strategy toolkit to enhance the learning skills and experiences of students. Under the guidance of the School Director and PLC Organisers, the PLC is integral to our school learning culture and professional development.

Application Process & Requirements
Applicants must have a valid permit to work in the Netherlands. All appointments are subject to the successful completion of an interview, trial lessons, identity checks, criminal record checks, and references.
Unless stated otherwise in the job advertisement, initial employment is for one year, followed by a permanent contract subject to satisfactory appraisal, completion of of paperwork, and acceptance and approval of your qualifications by DUO (Dutch Education Authorities).
Applications should contain a CV and a fully completed job application form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Requirements for Teaching Positions
- For Primary and Secondary: fully qualified teacher status in the country the qualification is obtained, and in the subject applied for (for UK/Ireland/Scotland: you have been awarded QTS and have successfully completed - or are exempt from - the statutory induction period)
- Additional for Secondary: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (Hons), or equivalent
- Additional qualifications (e.g. CELTA, FLE, etc.) if required for the position applied for
- Successful teaching experience
- Knowledge of international curricula
- Experience teaching pupils in their second language
- Native or near native (C2 level) competence in the languages in which you teach
- Knowledge of two or more European Union languages preferred
- Experience working collaboratively in an international environment
Teachers who have obtained their diplomas and certificates abroad, must have their qualifications recognised by the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs. Upon appointment, our Recruitment team will assist with this process.
Child Safeguarding/Screening
All applicants are subject to a screening process that includes: verification of qualifications, obtaining two supervisory references (including current employer's), and obtaining current and previous police checks/certificate of good conduct.
Aligned with the recommendations of the International Task Force on Child Protection, we hold ourselves to a high standard of effective recruiting practices with specific attention to child protection. To this end, all those appointed at ESH are required to obtain a certificate of good conduct (VOG). The decision to issue this certificate lies with the Dutch Ministry of Justice.
Your appointment with ESH takes place on condition that you obtain a VOG. This procedure will be explained in further detail by our Recruitment team upon appointment.

The purpose of the code is to provide a standard for a transparent and fair recruitment and selection procedure. ESH attaches considerable importance to the privacy and the protection of the personal data of applicants. Living in The Hague
The Hague is a highly cosmopolitan place to live and work. There are over 50,000 internationals living in the city, and more than 160 intergovernmental and non-governmental international organisations are housed in The Hague. It is truly an international city in the heart of The Netherlands.
City of Peace and Justice
In 1899, the first international peace conference was held in The Hague. It was the beginning of a special role for The Hague as the international city of peace and justice. Nationally, our city is known as ‘the Hofstad’, serving not only as the seat of the national government where vitally important decisions affecting the future of the country are taken every day, but also as the residence of the Dutch royal family... you might cross paths with the king or spot the prime minister biking to work, just like everyone else!
Home to International Organisations & Education
The International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, Eurojust, Europol, and the OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) are all based in The Hague. There are more than 130 NGOs here - such as UNICEF and Oxfam Novib - and most foreign embassies. With the Hague housing the international campuses of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Leiden University, and TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam nearby, the city attracts a steady stream of young, well-educated talent.
The City by the Sea
The Hague is the only large Dutch city by the sea. Living here means you have access to an 11 kilometre stretch of beach. It’s the perfect place for sports like beach volleyball and kite surfing. In fact, it’s the best surfing beach on the North Sea, with good waves and a laid back atmosphere, all located within fifteen minutes from our school!
Cultural Exposure
There is a wide choice of cultural venues with the city hosting 20 museums, 14 concert venues, 8 theatres, and plenty of festivals. For food-lovers, there is an abundance of places to try out from high-end restaurants to world cuisine or restaurants on the beach.
Travel Anywhere
With excellent accessibility by air, rail, and road, the world is close at hand when you’re in The Hague. It's conveniently situated between Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam-The Hague airport (30 min by road and rail), and has two major train stations connecting to Brussels, Paris, and London.
