Student well-being
The Student Well-being Counsellor, School Psychologist and School Social Worker are available to support students at ESH Secondary. The Support Department also has links with a range of private practices, professionals and organisations outside of school for specialist advice, information and support. The department also runs social skills and fear of failure courses for students throughout the school year.
Social emotional support
Mental well-being plays a big role in the development of youth. Needing social emotional support might be indicated by issues such as social development, bullying, challenging life-events, behavioural changes, stress, anxiety or other mental health issues etc. In collaboration with parents and teachers, our team aims to identify these factors and put a support plan in place. Currently, social emotional support is offered in English and Dutch.
Safeguarding protocol
Anti-bullying
The European School of The Hague (ESH) stands for a safe school with an excellent pedagogical, social, learning and working environment for students and staff. We want all our students and staff to feel safe at school, which is why ESH takes a zero tolerance approach to bullying.
ESH is a place where students can learn, develop, feel part of the community and to grow into confident, educated young adults. Enabling them to develop requires a safe and healthy environment at school.
At ESH, we work hard to prevent bullying through the pastoral care of the mentors. Please refer to our Anti-bullying protocol for more information. The aim of this protocol is to prevent, confront and stop bullying. The ESH also has an anti-bullying coordinator: Ms Sitskoorn (m.sitskoorn@eshthehague.nl).

OPDC Zuid-Holland West
The remedial education didactic centre (OPDC) is an above-school educational facility of the VO Zuid-Holland West partnership. They are there for pupils aged between 12 and 18 whose school of origin is temporarily unable to offer them suitable support.
Pupils at the OPDC remain enrolled at our school. We are and remain responsible for the pupil's education. We provide the OPDC with the textbooks, tests and the corresponding schedule. The educational programme is adjusted to make room in the timetable for various training and other programmes. The duration of the placement varies per pathway. During the placement, school subjects are worked on as much as possible and school progress is monitored. There are regular assessment meetings during which, in addition to progress at OPDC, school progress is discussed to ensure that the pupil does not build up too much ground. There is always good consultation on this between parents, carers, pupil, OPDC and the school.
The OPDC has several departments, where pupils work on behaviour and education in different ways within their own possibilities. The aim is always for the pupil to return to our school and continue his/her journey within regular education. The OPDC works intensively with the pupil, the parents, carers and the school.
