Learning Support
Language Learning Support
Some students are truly bilingual or multilingual upon entering the school. However, for others there is the expectation that they will work toward becoming fluent in at least two languages by the end of their Secondary education. Mother tongue classes are offered for several European languages and, in addition to this, many students must reach a level of fluency in another language in order to follow their classes. This can be challenging for some learners and is unique to the European School system.
At ESH Secondary, language support is available in English, French, German, and Dutch, at both L1 and L2 levels. Support is offered on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, and typically takes place during a student's free periods.
Where a student's level is significantly below what is expected for their year group, a period of intensive language support may be arranged. During this time, the student is temporarily withdrawn from their regular L1 or L2 class in order to receive focused, structured support in that language. This is always a temporary measure, reviewed regularly with the student's progress in mind. Across all language support, the focus is on building grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills, as well as developing the language competencies students need to access their wider curriculum.

Mathematics Support
Mathematics support is available for students who are finding the subject challenging and would benefit from additional guidance alongside their regular classes. In S4-S7, mathematics support is only available to students who take 3-period or 4-period maths and need extra help to consolidate their understanding or keep pace with the curriculum. Students in the advanced level have proven their potential in mathematics, either throughout their school career or by achieving a good result on the entrance test.
Support sessions are led by our mathematics support teachers either one-to-one or in small groups and are tailored to each student's needs. Sessions typically focus on:
- Reviewing and consolidating prior knowledge
- Clarifying concepts covered in class
- Previewing upcoming material
- Building and strengthening core skills
- Developing study and test-taking strategies
Support in Learning and Planning
Executive functioning refers to a set of cognitive skills that play a significant role in how students organise, plan, and manage their learning. When these skills are underdeveloped, students may find it harder to manage their time, keep on top of assignments, or build consistent study habits — all of which can affect both their academic performance and overall wellbeing.
Where a student would benefit from targeted support in this area, our Learning Support Specialist works with them individually or in small groups to develop practical strategies tailored to their needs. Sessions may focus on planning and organisation, time management, effective study techniques, and building healthier routines around homework and independent work.
