Student Mobility Programme

One of the benefits of being part of the European School system is the opportunity for S4 and S5 students to take part in the exchange programme between European Schools. This enables students to improve their language skills, be immersed in a different culture and make new friends! The programme allows S5 students to attend for the duration of semester 1, including for exams, at the hosting school. In some cases, S4 students may be allowed to go for 6 weeks, preferably during the first semester. Students can request to be placed with a host family to speak a specific language in order to further their language acquisition.

The 3 Phases of the Student Mobility Programme

Phase 1: Exploring options and applying for exchange

Phase 2: Finding a host family, paperwork and practicalities

Once you have received confirmation of placement in a school, they will let you know how to go about finding a host family – usually through contacting the host school’s APEE (Parents Association)
If a host family is found, make contact and decide on dates for the exchange. Inform ESH via exchanges@eshthehague.nl. Also inform the host school, as some schools set dates for you.
Start filling in the paperwork. You need to fill in form numbers 4, 5, 7 and 9, located at the end of this webpage.
Communicate with host school and host family about practicalities, such as books, subject choices, transport between school and host family, lunch – if necessary, make arrangements with host school canteen, some schools require you to sign for additional items such as permission to leave, use of a locker etc.

Studies and Results

While on exchange, students continue studying the same subjects they take at their own school, provided they’re offered by the host school. Any subjects not taught at the host school must be studied independently during the stay abroad, and for these subjects, the student’s second semester results will be doubled. For S5 students, A and B-marks obtained at host school will be counted.

Results and reports

Results obtained in a host school during an exchange will be processed as follows:

6-8 week exchanges

Results will be sent home in the form of a report, but they will NOT count at ESH. Often there is a discrepancy between the curricula and students often have to take subjects in different languages in their host schools, which puts them at a disadvantage. For short exchanges, therefore the results obtained will be logged, but not counted.

4 month exchanges (S5)

Results will be brought home in the form of a report and counted towards the end-of-year mark at ESH. As in S5, there are only 2 exams that make up the B-mark, the exam result obtained in the host school will count as one of the 2 B-marks. All A-marks obtained in the host school will also be counted by ESH.

Host schools send us a copy of their report, as all European Schools give out reports four times a year. The report will be shared with students and parents during the ESH reporting period.
