Student Mobility Programme

A mobility programme in a different country gives pupils the chance to develop more intensively in many regards, e.g., to improve their language skills and to mature through experiencing a different educational and cultural environment.

European Schools and Accredited European Schools offer the possibility of hosting other pupils as well as supporting their pupils to visit other schools. Both can take place as one-to-one exchange mobilities or in some exceptional cases as one-way mobilities.

The Pupils’ Mobility Programme takes place during the 1st semester of S5 (finishing the last school day before the Christmas holidays). However, if there are justified reasons, the 1st semester of S4 or a shorter exchange of two month in S4 is also possible.

The 3 Phases of the Student Mobility Programme

Phase 1: Exploring options and applying for exchange

Phase 2: Finding a host family, paperwork and practicalities

Once you have received confirmation of placement in a school, they will let you know how to go about finding a host family – usually through contacting the host school’s APEE (Parents Association)
If a host family is found, make contact and decide on dates for the exchange. Inform ESH via exchanges@eshthehague.nl. Also inform the host school, as some schools set dates for you.
Start filling in the paperwork. You need to fill in form numbers 4, 5, 7 and 9, located at the end of this webpage.
Communicate with host school and host family about practicalities, such as books, subject choices, transport between school and host family, lunch – if necessary, make arrangements with host school canteen, some schools require you to sign for additional items such as permission to leave, use of a locker etc.
