Welcome to S5!
Wednesday 2 September
To reduce crowding at the school gate, there will be a staggered start time on Wednesday 2 September. S5 students can arrive anytime between 08:30 and 09:00. To adhere to the coronavirus requirements, parents are asked to drop you off at the front gate without entering the school grounds.
You will be greeted by staff on arrival and shown to a meeting point to meet your Mentor, and at 09:00 you will be taken to collect your books and get your lockers. As the school building is a new environment for all students, staff will ensure that students are guided to their classrooms so that no one gets lost.
Your first day of school will end at 12:45. View your full schedule here:
Meet your Mentor and Cycle Leader
You will meet your Mentor teacher on the first day of school and they will help you access your timetable in Webuntis. During your mentor lessons you can ask your Mentor for help with any issues you may be experiencing or questions you might have. Your Mentor will also be the point of contact between your parents and the school. If they have any questions about your education, they should contact your Mentor first.
The Pre-Orientation Cycle Leader is Mrs Oosterman-Neuhuijs. She is responsible for overseeing the education your teachers will provide. If you have questions that your Mentor cannot answer, you can contact Mrs Oosterman-Neuhuijs. You will meet Mrs Oosterman-Neuhuijs at the assembly on the first day of school. Support staff will also be present at the assembly to introduce themselves to the students and briefly explain the support they offer.
As the oldest students in the Pre-Orientation cycle, the younger students in the school will start looking up to you as leaders. We have every confidence in your ability to become positive role models for others, set good examples, and work on developing the leadership skills you’ll need in the Orientation Cycle.
S5 is an important year in which you will be asked to consider your subject choices for the Orientation Cycle. These decisions are important, as the subjects you choose to study may affect your eligibility for different university courses. We will provide you with guidance and more information about this as the year progresses, but the best thing that you can do to prepare is make sure you take your studies in S5 seriously. Establishing good study habits now will help you prepare for the Orientation Cycle.
There are no B-Tests for S5 students, because you will sit exams instead. Exams will occur twice a year, and typically take 90 minutes to complete. Your subject teachers will give you more information about what will be assessed in the exams and when they will occur.
S5 offers some other unique educational experiences, such as the chance to join the Physical Education department on the S5 Wintersports trip and the Work Experience programme. It remains to be seen how the coronavirus will impact these activities this school year, but we will keep you informed of any updates.
