Primary Physical Education
Primary Physical Education aims to equip pupils with the skills, knowledge, and motivation needed for independent, responsible, and lifelong participation in physical activity and movement culture, including games, fitness, sports, and dance. Just as learning a language enables communication beyond school, physical education prepares pupils to participate confidently in movement situations both inside and outside the school environment. Pupils learn how to move, how to move together, and how to reflect on movement and their own abilities.
At the European School The Hague (Primary), Physical Education is an essential part of the curriculum and supports pupils’ physical, social, and emotional development within a multicultural and multilingual learning environment. In line with the European Curriculum and national attainment goals for primary education in the Netherlands, pupils develop fundamental movement skills such as balancing, running, jumping, and dancing, while also learning to cooperate, show respect for others, act safely, and demonstrate fair play.
All Early Years and Primary classes receive two 45-minute Physical Education lessons per week, taught by qualified specialist teachers. Lessons take place in well-equipped indoor and outdoor facilities and are delivered in a challenging yet safe environment. Activities are adapted to different ability levels, ensuring that every pupil can experience success and build confidence. A positive pedagogical climate encourages motivation, social responsibility, and respect for oneself and others, supporting pupils in making informed and motivated choices for ongoing participation in sport and physical activity and fostering a lifelong positive attitude towards healthy, active living.

Sport-Related Events
During School Time
Throughout the school year, a variety of sport-related events are organised to promote enjoyment of physical activity and strengthen the school community. These include the Koningsspelen for the whole school, as well as dedicated sports days for Primary 1–2, Primary 3–4, and Primary 5 to Secondary 1. These events encourage participation, teamwork, and a positive attitude towards movement and healthy living.
In addition, pupils are occasionally offered sport clinics during Physical Education lessons. These clinics introduce pupils to different sports and movement activities, often led by specialists, and provide opportunities to develop new skills, explore personal interests, and broaden their experience within the movement culture.
After School Sports Events
One of the after school sports activities in which the European School The Hague participates is the CPC Run. This event encourages pupils to take part in a large-scale sporting event outside of school, promoting physical fitness, perseverance, and enjoyment of running.
Participation in the CPC Run also supports pupils in developing a positive attitude towards an active and healthy lifestyle beyond the school environment.
School Sport Tournaments
Schools located in The Hague can participate in a wide range of school sports tournaments organised by local sports clubs in cooperation with the Municipality of The Hague. The European School The Hague has been actively participating in these tournaments for many years.
The sports offered vary per tournament and may include activities such as handball, football, hockey, table tennis, gymnastics, korfball, badminton, and beach volleyball. These tournaments are primarily aimed at pupils from Primary 2 to Primary 5, although the eligible year levels may differ depending on the specific event. Participation in school sports tournaments provides pupils with valuable opportunities to experience competitive sport in a positive and supportive environment, develop teamwork and sportsmanship, and strengthen their connection with local sports organisations.
